『After meeting with Dycedarg, you met with your brother, Zalbag and your sister Alma. Zalbag, going after the thieves, claimed a spy heading to Dorter died while collecting information...』
[Ramza, Delita, and Algus walk along a stone bridge in the gardens of Igros. As they pass over the water, Algus stops, hanging his head. Ramza and Delita turn back to look at him.]
ALGUS: ...My family was once respected like the Beoulves.
[He turns to look out over the water.]
ALGUS: My grandfather was captured during the Fifty Year War... He sold his friends out to the enemy to save himself. But, as he left the castle, he got stabbed in the back by a cadet just like myself. One of my grandfather's friends managed to escape and spread the story around. Of course my father didn't believe it, but everyone else did, they deserted him...
[He picks up a stone and tosses it into the stream below.]
ALGUS: Rank...Dycedarg would never meet with someone like me...
[He looks down. Everyone turns at the sound of another voice.]
VOICE OF A YOUNG GIRL: Delita!
DELITA: Teta!
RAMZA: Alma! Zalbag!
[The screen pans to show Zalbag, Alma, and Teta approaching. Alma waves before they walk over.]
ALMA: Brother Ramza. You came back.
RAMZA: Long time no see, brother.
ZALBAG: I heard how you beat the thieves in Gariland. That's worthy of a Beoulve. I'm sure father would've been pleased with you.
RAMZA: ......Thank you.
ZALBAG: Heh...haven't changed a bit. You don't like that much, eh? Delita, you look good. I heard about your role also. Just look how happy Teta is.
[Everyone turns to Teta.]
TETA: Delita, I'm so glad you're doing well.
DELITA: And you also. How is your schooling?
TETA: Fine. Everyone is so nice to me...
[Zalbag turns back to speak to the others.]
ZALBAG: I'd like to talk more with you, but I must hunt down some thieves. Pardon me.
RAMZA: I pray for your victory.
[Zalbag waves towards him as he begins to leave. Then he pauses.]
ZALBAG: ...The Death Corps have demanded a ransom.
ALGUS: What!?
[Zalbag turns back to speak to the others.]
ZALBAG: ...I can't understand it. The Death Corps claim to be anarchists, but they only rob and hurt the nobility. It's hard to believe they would kidnap the Marquis just for money.
ALGUS: Absurd! Why, they're nothing more than knaves, I say!
ZALBAG: The messenger we sent still hasn't returned. He's probably in trouble, but the nobles say there's no need to search for his whereabouts.
RAMZA: Where was he when you last heard from him?
[Zalbag turns away.]
ZALBAG: A trade city called Dorter, east of Gallione......Guarding a castle is boring work. Don't you think?
[Zalbag leaves. Algus moves in the other direction as if to depart.]
DELITA: Teta, I'm sorry. We must go.
[He approaches her as she shakes her head.]
TETA: Don't worry about me. Just take care of yourself.
[They embrace.]
DELITA: Don't worry. I'll come back safely...so be a good girl.
[Delita moves to follow Algus, Teta following behing him.]
DELITA: Well then, let's go, Algus.
[The three depart. Alma bows her head.]
ALMA: What Teta said is not true. Actually.........
RAMZA: Something wrong with Teta?
ALMA: She has been picked on at school because of her rank.
RAMZA: .........
ALMA: Sorry...I shouldn't have worried you like that. Teta will be OK. I'll be there for her. Trust me.
RAMZA: I'm not worried. But don't you overdo it.
ALMA: You're the one going too far to meet their expectations. Just be yourself and don't be restricted by your name.
RAMZA: You sound like our mother. Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
[Ramza turns to leave while Alma looks on, a breeze blowing her hair and skirt.]
ALMA: Ramza......
[Ramza, Delita, and Argath walk along a stone bridge in the gardens of Igros. As they pass over the water, Argath stops, hanging his head. Ramza and Delita turn back to look at him.]
ARGATH: My own house was once respected as highly as House Beoulve, you know.
[He turns to look out over the water.]
ARGATH: At least, until my grandfather was captured during the war. He turned traitor, thinking to buy his freedom with the lives of his friends. But his freedomscarce outlived his honor. He was not a dozen paces out their gate when the dagger found his back. Killed by some common squire, no more a knight than I. One of the men he betrayed later escaped and spread word of his misdeeds. My lord father would have none of it, of course. But he was the only one. Our bannermen deserted us, our reputation ruined.
[He picks up a stone and tosses it into the stream below.]
ARGATH: I suppose I had best remember my place. Your lord brother has no reason to lend ear to please from the likes of me.
[He looks down. Everyone turns at the sound of another voice.]
VOICE OF A YOUNG GIRL: Delita!
DELITA: Tietra!
RAMZA: Alma! Zalbaag!
[The screen pans to show Zalbaag, Alma, and Tietra approaching. Alma waves before they walk over.]
ALMA: Ramza, you've come home!
RAMZA: It's been some time, hasn't it, Zalbaag?
ZALBAAG: I heard about Gariland. They say you made short work of those brigands. Now you're truly the right to call yourself a Beoulve. Father would be proud.
RAMZA: Thank you, Lord Brother.
ZALBAAG: Ha! You certainly haven't changed. Gods forbid you show a bit of cheer on being praised! And you, Delita! Do not think word of your deeds escapes our ears. Your sister's been so full of pride I quite feared she might burst!
[Everyone turns to Tietra.]
TIETRA: Worry not, my seams have held. I'm glad to see you looking so well, Delita.
DELITA: And I you. Have you settled in at school?
TIETRA: Yes, the others have all been quite kind to me.
[Zalbaag turns back to speak to the others.]
ZALBAAG: Would that we could speak at greater leisure, but there are duties that require my attendance. Rogues do not catch themselves.
RAMZA: I understand. Good luck.
[Zalbaag waves towards him as he begins to leave. Then he pauses.]
ZALBAAG: We received a note of ransom from the Corpse Brigade.
ARGATH: What!?
[Zalbag turns back to speak to the others.]
ZALBAAG: Something about it sits unwell with me. They are anarchists to be sure, bent on bringing down the aristocracy. But they fancy themselves righteous, and prey only on the nobility and those in our employ. Would such as they truly kidnap the marquis for want of coin?
ARGATH: Why wouldn't they? They're naught but common footpads!
ZALBAAG: One of the men I planted among them has not returned. I worry he may be caught up in something serious, but there are those who do not think some mere spy worth a search party's efforts.
RAMZA: Where was he last known to be?
[Zalbaag turns away.]
ZALBAAG: A merchant city named Dorter in eastern Gallione. Guarding a castle grows dreadfully dull...Wouldn't you agree?
[Zalbaag leaves. Argath moves in the other direction as if to depart.]
DELITA: Forgive us, Tietra. It seems we must be leaving sooner than we had planned.
[He approaches her as she shakes her head.]
TIETRA: Don't worry about me--just take care of yourself.
[They embrace.]
DELITA: I will. Mind your studies! I'll be back before you've even noticed I'm gone.
[Delita moves to follow Argath, Tietra following behind him.]
DELITA: Let's be on our way.
[The three depart. Alma bows her head.]
ALMA: Tietra puts on a brave face, but the truth is not as honeyed as her words.
RAMZA: What do you mean?
ALMA: She has a hard time of it at school. The others tease her for being low-born.
RAMZA: ...
ALMA: Forgive me, I shouldn't have said anything. I'm sure you have worries enough of your own. Tietra will be all right. I'm here to look after her.
RAMZA: Then there is naught to worry about. But mind your own limits. You can't be responsible for everything.
ALMA: Says the brother who never fails to do any and all that is expected of him. Don't lose sight of yourself, Ramza. You needn't let your life be ruled by the fact you were born a Beoulve.
RAMZA: Now you're starting to sound like Mother. Ha ha ha!
[Ramza turns to leave while Alma looks on, a breeze blowing her hair and skirt.]
ALMA: Ramza......
from Sugnuf's story translation.
[The boys are crossing a lovely setting of canals and waterducts.]
ALGUS: ... There was a time when my family was once respected like the Beoulves. [turns away] But my grandfather was captured during the Fifty Years' War... To save his own skin he traded in those of his comrades. But, as he left the enemy castle, he was stabbed in the back, by none other than a squire just like myself. One of my grandfather's ex-comrades escaped and spread the story around. Of course, my dad didn't believe a word of it, but everyone else did. He was deserted... [throws a pebble into the water] Rank, status... by myself, the likes of me would have never had an audience with Lord Dycedarg...
[From behind, a voice echoes.]
VOICE OF A YOUNG GIRL: Deliiiitaaaa!!!
[All three boys turn around.]
DELITA: Teeta!
RAMZA: Alma, Zalbag!
[Alma waves to the boys, and the three greet them.]
ALMA: Ramza, you're finally back!
RAMZA: [to Zalbag] It's been a while, Zalbag.
ZALBAG: I hear you lambasted an entire band of criminals in Gariland to apulp! A task worthy of a Beoulve! No question, father would've been pleased.
RAMZA: ... Thank you.
ZALBAG: Ha, ha... you haven't changed a bit, have you? Still uncomfortable with words like that. [to Delita] And Delita, you've certainly grown into a strong young man. I heard about your role in repelling the rebels too. Just look how happy Teeta is, isn't that right?
TEETA: Delita, I'm happy you're doing so well.
DELITA: And I'm equally happy to see you doing well. How goes school? Are you getting used to it?
TEETA: Mm-hm! Everyone is so nice to me...
ZALBAG: Alas, I'd love to stay to stay and chat, but criminals are everywhere these days, and so my work has no end. Do pardon me, as I go back to hunting.
RAMZA: I pray for your victory, brother.
[Zalbag straightens his glove, and turns away, but stops.]
ZALBAG: ... The Death Corps have demanded ransom.
ALGUS: What!?
ZALBAG: [turns around] 'Tis beyond my ken. The Death Corps rebels preach death to noblility and their followers, and that their wrath does not extend beyond these. It seems unusual that they would kidnap the Marquis simply for the sake of money.
ALGUS: Absurd! They're no more than common criminals, I say!
ZALBAG: The winds carry nothing from the "grass" {Translator's note: euphemism for spies} planted in their midst. I'm given to think that they've met with trouble or other serious business, but the nobles think the circumstances do not warrant further investigation.
RAMZA: Zalbag, where was communication was lost?
ZALBAG: East of Gallionne, in the trade city of Dorter... I dare say, guarding a castle is such boring work. Wouldn't you agree, Ramza?
[exit Zalbag]
[Algus moves to the side.]
DELITA: Teeta, I'm sorry. We must go.
TEETA: [shakes head] Don't worry about me, Delita. Just take care of yourself.
[The two embrace.]
DELITA: Needn't worry, Teeta, we're not going to do anything stupid. Be a good girl while I'm away, alright? [moves up the bridge] Well, we ought to get going, Algus.
[exit Delita, Algus, Teeta. Ramza follows, but is interrupted by Alma]
ALMA: What Teeta said about school is not true, actually...
RAMZA: Something troubles her?
ALMA: Many mock her at school for being a commoner...
RAMZA: ....
ALMA: I'm sorry Ramza, I shouldn't have worried you like that. Teeta will be alright. I'll be there for her. Trust me.
RAMZA: I'm not worried. But you shouldn't overstrain yourself, either.
ALMA: You're the one going too far to meet the expectations of others, Ramza. Be yourself. Don't feel so bounded by your name.
RAMZA: Ha, ha, ha, you sound just like mother...
[exit Ramza]
ALMA: Ramza...
[fade out]
from Final Fantasy Tactics: English Compiled Ultimania.
[Algus picks up a stone, and stands in the courtyard with Ramza and Delita.]
ALGUS:...In older times, my family...it was once as respected as the Beoulves. During the Fifty Year War, my grandfather had been caught by the enemy. And my grandfather... he sold the lives of his comrades in order to save himself. Yes, to save his own skin. But, as he took his freedom and left the enemy castle, he was cut down. ...by a cadet no different than I. One of my grandfather's comrades escaped with his life, and spouted the story to everyone who had ears. Of course, my father never believed a word. But, ah, as for everyone else... one by one, they deserted him.
[Algus throws the stone into the water of the castle's moat.]
ALGUS: Such is one's place in society... Certainly, Lord Dycedarg would have never met with me otherwise.
YOUNG VOICE: Bro—ther!
DELITA: Teta!
RAMZA: Alma, Brother Zalbag!
[Zalbag, Alma and Teta enter, crossing waters.]
ALMA: Brother Ramza, you've returned, I see!
RAMZA: It has been some time, Brother.
ZALBAG: I've heard of your victory against the thieves in Gariland. That is true to the way of the Beoulves. Our late Father would have been delighted, I'm sure of it.
RAMZA: ....Thank you.
ZALBAG: Haha... the same, per usual. Always so plain with praise when you should be jovial, eh? And you, Delita, don't you look strapping! I've also heard talk about your accomplishments. Look how jubilant Teta is, now.
TETA: Brother Delita, I'm merely happiest when you're well.
DELITA: As am I to you, Teta, to see you well. Have you settled nicely in school?
TETA: I have, everyone has been more than kind to me...
ZALBAG: I'd love to stay and chat, however, there are thieves that need hunting. My pardon.
RAMZA: Be victorious.
[Zalbag makes to leave, though pauses after a mere few steps. He glances back over his shoulder.]
ZALBAG: ...The Death Corps have made their ransom.
ALGUS: What say you!?
ZALBAG: ...I can't understand it. They spout off anarchy and their hate for nobility, yet do not stoop to petty thievery against those who serve us. Hence the corps kidnapping the Marquis for monetary ransom is despicable, especially by their own standards, no?
ALGUS: Ridiculous! Ruffians, the lot of them!
ZALBAG: Intelligence from 'Grass', our spy, has not yet returned. We don't know what sort of valuable information 'Grass' may have uncovered, but the statesmen don't think it important enough to look into the matter.
RAMZA: Where do you think he has been intercepted?
ZALBAG: East of Gallionne, in a trade city by the name of Dortar, I believe.... ...You are on guard duty for the castle, yes? How very...tedious. Don't you think so?
[Zalbag exits.]
DELITA: I'm sorry, Teta, we'll be going.
TETA: No need to fret over me. Please take care.
[Delita takes Teta in his arms, embracing her.]
DELITA: It's all right, no harm will come to me. Be a good girl until my return. Now then, let's move out, Ramza.
[Algus, Delita and Teta take their leave. Ramza makes way to follow, pausing when Alma calls to him.]
ALMA: Teta may have sounded well, but truly she's....
RAMZA: ...truly what?
ALMA: She's repeatedly tormented at school because of her class.
RAMZA: .............
ALMA: Forgive me, Brother. I didn't mean to make you worry. Teta will be fine, since I will be caring for her! Please be peace of mind.
RAMZA: ...And you tell me not to worry. Don't do anything brash.
ALMA: Same to you, Brother, as you're the one shouldering everyone's grand expectations of you. Don't allow the Beoulve name to bind you; my brother is my brother.
RAMZA: And how you sound exactly like Mother! Hahaha!
[They laugh. After calming, Ramza finally makes his leave.]
ALMA: Brother Ramza...
He thought he'd buy his freedom with the lives of his friends. On his way out, he was stabbed by a squire by accident; they'd meant to let him walk. One of my grandfather's friends managed to escape and spread the story. Of course my father didn't believe it, but everyone else did, and they deserted him...
[He picks up a stone and tosses it into the stream below.]
ALGUS: That coward stole my birthright.
ALMA: Hello, brother. You came back.
RAMZA: It's been a long time, brother.
ZALBAG: I heard about Gariland. You made short work of the brigands. Now you've the right to call yourself a Beoulve. Father would've been proud.
RAMZA: ...Thank you.
ZALBAG: Heh... haven't changed a bit. You don't like praise much, eh? Delita, you look good. I heard about you, too. Just look at how full of pride Teta is.
[Everyone turns to Teta.]
TETA: Delita, I'm so glad you're doing well.
DELITA: And you! How is your schooling?
TETA: Fine. I feel very fortunate...
[Zalbag turns back to speak to the others.]
ZALBAG: I'd love to stay and chat, but I must hunt down some thieves. Pardon me.
RAMZA: I'll pray for your victory.
[Zalbag waves towards him as he begins to leave. Then he pauses.]
ZALBAG: ...The Blood Corps have demanded a ransom.
ALGUS: What!?
[Zalbag turns back to speak to the others.]
ZALBAG: ...I can't understand it. The Blood Corps claim to be anarchists, but they only rob and hurt the nobility. It's hard to believe they would kidnap the Marquis just for want of coin.
ALGUS: Absurd! Why, they're nothing more than knaves, I say!
ZALBAG: The spy we sent still hasn't returned. He's probably in trouble, but no one has the stomach to head after him...
RAMZA: Where was he last known to be?
[Zalbag turns away.]
ZALBAG: A trade city called Dorter, to the east... ...Guarding a castle is boring work. Don't you think?
[Zalbag leaves. Algus moves in the other direction as if to depart.]
DELITA: Sorry, Teta. Got to take that hint.
[He approaches her as she shakes her head.]
TETA: Don't worry about me. Just take care of yourself.
[They embrace.]
DELITA: I will. Do well for me.
[Delita moves to follow Algus, Teta following behind him.]
DELITA: Well then, let's go, Algus.
[The three depart. Alma bows her head.]
ALMA: Teta puts on a brave face, but...
RAMZA: Something wrong with her?
ALMA: Someone found out that her parents raked shit for a living.
RAMZA: ...
ALMA: Sorry, I shouldn't have said anything. I'm sure you're worried enough. Teta will be OK. I'll be there for her. Trust me.
RAMZA: I'm not worried. But don't you overdo it.
ALMA: You're the one going too far to meet their expectations. Just be yourself and don't worry about your name.
RAMZA: You sound like our mother. Ha.
[Ramza turns to leave while Alma looks on, a breeze blowing her hair and skirt.]
ALMA: Ramza...
[Ramza, Delita, and Algus walk along a stone bridge in the gardens of Igros. As they pass over the water, Algus stops, hanging his head. Ramza and Delita turn back to look at him.]
ALGUS: Would you believe my family was once as respected as the Beoulves?
[He turns to look out over the water.]
ALGUS: Until my grandfather was captured during the Fifty Year War. Sold his comrades out to Ordallia to save himself. As he left Lazhadera Castle, he thought he'd gotten away clean until he was stabbed through the back not even ten steps from the castle. One of my grandfather's comrades managed to escape and showed everyone his true colors. Only my father denied the facts, but he damned our family legacy nonetheless.
[He picks up a stone and tosses it into the stream below.]
ALGUS: It's thanks to his self-important ass that Dycedarg doesn't see me as an Ivalician noble...
[He looks down. Everyone turns at the sound of another voice.]
VOICE OF A YOUNG GIRL: Delita!
DELITA: Tietra!
RAMZA: Alma! Zalbag!
[The screen pans to show Zalbag, Alma, and Tietra approaching. Alma waves before they walk over.]
ALMA: Welcome back, Ramza. It's good to see you!
RAMZA: Long time no see, Zalbag.
ZALBAG: Sorry I can't abandon my duties to see you and Delita more often. Haha. I heard about your victory in Gariland. Well done.
RAMZA: Still wish we didn't have to kill them.
ZALBAG: Heh, you haven't changed at all. It gets easier with time, trust me. Delita, doing well for yourself, huh? Heard about your role as Second Commander. Congratulations. Tietra's been wanting to talk to you since we heard of your arrival.
[Everyone turns to Tietra.]
TIETRA: Glad to hear you're doing wellDelita. Been scared for you all week. Feels a little silly now, in hindsight. You've paced Ramza in every spar you two have ever been in afterall!
DELITA: Now you know Ramza has a crippling handicap. He'll never take my advice to cut his hair. How's school been? Making any friends?
TIETRA: Oh, uh, quite well, actually. Everyone's been friendly so far.
[Zalbag turns back to speak to the others.]
ZALBAG: Hate interrupting a reunion, but I've thieves to hunt down.
RAMZA: Safe travels.
[Zalbag waves towards him as he begins to leave. Then he pauses.]
ZALBAG: You'll hear about it eventually. The Brigade have demanded a ransom.
ALGUS: Of course they would!
[Zalbag turns back to speak to the others.]
ZALBAG: That's not what's surprising, but the fact they're demanding a ransom seems off. Sure their animosity towards nobility does have some justification, I admit, but they've never kidnapped anyone.
ALGUS: They're just a bunch of greedy thugs, Zalbag. Nothing justifiable or noble about them.
ZALBAG: On top of that, we've not heard back from our spy--any chance you could help with that? We'd mount a search for him, but we can't officially spare anyone to do so.
RAMZA: Where was he when you last heard from him?
[Zalbag turns away.]
ZALBAG: Dorter. Due east, juist past the woods. If you happen to find anyone willing to go, give them my regards, would you? Personally, I find this castle-guarding a poor expenditure of resources.
[Zalbag leaves. Algus moves in the other direction as if to depart.]
DELITA: We're heading out, Tietra. Sorry we couldn't talk more.
[He approaches her as she shakes her head.]
TIETRA: Don't worry about me, take care of yourself and bring him back safely if you find him.
[They embrace.]
DELITA: We'll do our best. Best behavior while I'm gone, understand?
[Delita moves to follow Algus, Tietra following behind him.]
DELITA: It's not a hundred soldiers, but it's the best you'll get in this situation. Care to help me with provisions, Algus?
[The three depart. Alma bows her head.]
ALMA: Ramza, wait! Tietra's lying.
RAMZA: Why? What's going on?
ALMA: Ever since Dad died she's been bullied at school for not having noble blood.
RAMZA: That's horrible. That's what she really wanted to talk about, wasn't it?
ALMA: Yes, I'm sorry, she doesn't want to worry Delita, and I shouldn't make you worry too. It's just disgusting what they've labeled her, and I just had to tell someone I can trust. Couldn't bear not saying anything anymore. I'll do what I can to protect her until you come back, but they do need to talk about it. Don't say anything to Delita?
RAMZA: Well... alright. I won't if you think I shouldn't. Just don't go overboard, alright?
ALMA: Should take your own advice too. I know you want to help however you can, but don't let the fact we've Beoulves dictate your personality.Be yourself once in a while. Okay? Paint more landscapes, take up protraiture again. Something besides trying to exceed every militaristic expectation.
RAMZA: Are you my sister or my mother? Hahahaha!
[Ramza turns to leave while Alma looks on, a breeze blowing her hair and skirt.]
ALMA: A very worried sister. Just come back safe...
