As impossible as it was, he had wanted to reconcile. He had wanted their silences to end. Even with the throb of old wounds aching in his chest, Delita had desired that his wife should clasp him close again: that they should embrace and let their scars come together as if in a kiss.

As impossible as it was, he forgave her.

He tried but once to declare it. It had been a simple request: "I would see you." They had not spoken.

He saw her trembling, and he knew. He knew she heard an order and not a plea.
